India’s National Film Award-winning star Dhanush is set to portray India’s revered former president and aerospace scientist Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in a biopic titled “Kalam: The Missile Man of India,” unveiled at the Cannes Film Market.
The project will be helmed by director Om Raut, who previously won national recognition for “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior,” with “Neerja” and “Maidaan” scribe Saiwyn Quadras penning the screenplay.
The film will trace Kalam’s remarkable journey, chronicling his rise from humble beginnings to becoming both the celebrated “Missile Man of India” and eventually the nation’s 11th President. The biopic draws inspiration from Kalam’s bestselling memoir “Wings of Fire.”
The film brings together producers Abhishek Agarwal of Abhishek Agarwal Arts (the banner behind controversial blockbuster “The Kashmir Files”) and T-Series’ Bhushan Kumar, marking Raut’s third collaboration with the latter.
“This is one of the most transformative and defining performances of his career,” the producers noted regarding Dhanush’s casting. “Known for his remarkable range and emotional depth, Dhanush now takes on the monumental responsibility of portraying one of India’s most beloved visionaries.”
Raut described the film as more than a political biography, positioning it as “an insight into leadership and nation-building” that will explore “the man behind the missile programs and the presidency — the poet, the teacher, the dreamer whose every word carried both science and spirituality in equal measures.”
“In an era starved of true statesmen, Kalam stood above politics and pettiness. He was a man who was known for power of education, excellence and indigenous innovation,” Raut added. “To bring his story to screen is an artistic challenge and a moral and cultural responsibility. His life is lesson that is bound to connect with people no matter who they are and where they come from.”
The film is produced by Abhishek Agarwal, Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, and Anil Sunkara.
