Brad Treliving to remain Maple Leafs' GM

Despite some changes to the Toronto Maple Leafs front office, Brad Treliving won’t be going anywhere.

The 55-year-old Treliving will remain the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs as he prepares for his third season at the helm, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

The Leafs announced Thursday that team president Brendan Shanahan’s contract will not be renewed after 11 seasons.

Treliving’s status was discussed by some fans following the team’s Game 7 loss to Florida on Sunday, marking the ninth straight season the Maple Leafs failed to get out of the first or second round.

Treliving was hired on May 31, 2023 after nine seasons in charge of the Calgary Flames’ roster. This season marked just the second time the Maple Leafs have made it to the second round during the “Core Four” era, and the first Atlantic Division title.

In his two seasons at the helm, Treliving has retooled the defence and brought in proven winners to complete the core of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares.

Of the six defencemen to play in the playoffs for Toronto, four of them (Chris Tanev, Brandon Carlo, Simon Benoit, Oliver Ekman-Larsson) were acquired or signed by Treliving.

The GM also signed 2024 Stanley Cup champions Steven Lorentz and Anthony Stolarz, along with Ekman-Larsson, to add some cup pedigree to the roster.

Treliving hasn’t been shy about giving out large contracts either. He handed big-money extensions to Nylander ($11.5 million AAV) and Matthews ($13.25 million AAV), with Matthews’ contract making him the highest-paid player in NHL history.

Treliving now faces tough decisions with the Maple Leafs’ roster, with both Marner and Tavares set to hit unrestricted free agency on July 1. Star forward Matthew Knies, who broke out with 29 goals in the regular season, is also set to recieve a pay raise as a restricted free agent.
