BOSTON — Alex Bregman, the most consistent player on the Red Sox thus far in an inconsistent season, exited Friday’s first game of a day-night doubleheader against the Orioles with right quad tightness after belting a single to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Bregman turned hard between first and second and stopped when he realized stretching a double wouldn’t be a smart decision. However, that is when he appeared to hurt himself.
As Bregman got back to first base, he immediately signaled for time and motioned to the dugout that he needed to come out of the game.
Bregman was moving gingerly as he walked back to the dugout.
In his first season with the Red Sox, Bregman has slashed .299/.385/.553 with 17 doubles, 11 homers and 35 RBIs in 51 games and 197 at-bats.
The Red Sox have already been short-handed in the infield as first baseman Triston Casas went down for the season with a ruptured left patellar tendon on May 2.
