Henry Golding Threw Out His Back for a Week on 'The Old Guard 2'

Henry Golding got injured while filming “The Old Guard 2.”

“It always happens – I throw my back out,” he told me at the “Nine Perfect Strangers” Season 2 celebration in Beverly Hills. “We do a lot of stunts. There are a few crazy things.”

But he laughed when he admitted he didn’t hurt himself while cameras were rolling. “It’s always in practice,” Golding said. “It’s always the day before we’re meant to be filming. I’m like, [Golding makes a squealing sound], and then I’m blown out for the rest of the week.”

Star and producer Charlize Theron returns for the follow-up to the hit Netflix action movie. The official logline for “The Old Guard 2” reads: “Andy (Theron) leads immortal warriors against a powerful enemy threatening their group. They grapple with the resurfacing of a long-lost immortal, complicating their mission to safeguard humanity.”

The cast also includes Kiandra “KiKi” Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Veronica Ngo, Uma Thurman and Kamil Nozynski. Victoria Mahoney directs with a script from Leandro Fernandez, Greg Rucka and Sarah L. Walker.

Netflix recently released the first trailer for “The Old Guard 2,” which premieres on the streamer on July 2.

“It’s no easy business doing all that stuff,” Golding said of the movie’s stunt sequences. “We’re doing it all on the fly sometimes. You practice as much as possible, but it changes when you’re on location so you have to adapt.”

Golding said he was inspired by Theron’s commitment to the project. “She’s the best. She leads from the front,” he said. “She was on set every time as a producer and she does all of her stunts. She’s amazing.”

Theron teased the second installment when I caught up with her in July at her annual Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party fundraiser: “It’s really good. It’s a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie.”

The original “Old Guard,” released in 2020, was watched by 72 million households during its first four weeks on Netflix.

In May 2023, “Old Guard” producer Marc Evans said the franchise could become a trilogy. “There’s an ending to No. 2 that kind of demands a No. 3, which makes me very happy,” he said.
