Pete Alonso hits walk-off sacrifice fly as Mets beat Pirates

NEW YORK — ’s magical season continued Monday night at Citi Field, where the slugging first baseman — and early National League Most Valuable Player candidate — hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to lead the Mets to a 4-3 win over the Pirates.

A sloppy game for both teams continued into the bottom of the ninth, as Francisco Lindor reached on a fielding error with one out. Juan Soto singled him to third, and Alonso followed with a no-doubt sacrifice fly to right to end things.

The Mets had taken their first lead in the seventh inning on Luisangel Acuña’s daring baserunning feats, but misplays by Lindor and Acuña in the top of the ninth allowed the Pirates to tie the game. That set the stage for Alonso’s walk-off.
