The Job Titles Replacing the Chief Marketing Officer

While the chief marketing officer role isn’t going extinct, its numbers are in decline.

Figures from leadership advisory firm Russell Reynolds Associates (RRA) show 1,215 people around the globe accepted the CMO job title last year, down from 1,297 in 2023. A similar drop occurred between 2023 and 2022.

This downward trajectory stands in contrast to other C-suite titles responsible for interacting with customers and driving business growth, according to RRA.

The number of new chief revenue officers, for example, grew 17% when comparing 2024 with 2023. Chief sales officer appointments jumped 58% during the same period.
