A Spotlight on Asian American Culture Today was an evening celebrating the artistic brilliance of Asian Americans, the fastest growing demographic in the country. Held in collaboration with the Asian American Foundation, the event marked the culmination of The New York Times series focusing on the rising effect of the A.A.P.I. community on American culture. More than 350 guests filled the auditorium at the Times Center, including Times staff, TAAF members, and a vibrant swath of Asian Americans working in the arts, media, finance and more.
Kicking off the program was a conversation with the comedian and actress Aparna Nancherla, who shared the story behind the joke that changed her life, a live version of the final article in the series. Next came a panel featuring mixed-race Asian Americans as diverse as their disciplines: Chloe Misseldine, principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater; Leah Cohen, chef and restaurateur behind Pig & Khao and Piggyback; and the fashion designer and TikTok personality Joe Ando. Together, they shared their own reflections about their mixed-race background and how it has informed their career.
An intimate conversation with the author R.F. Kuang and the singer Laufey followed. Kuang’s literary insight paired beautifully with Laufey’s genre-defying artistry, and the night ended with a live performance from the Grammy-winning artist. Following the program, guests mingled at a cocktail reception curated by Ms. Cohen herself — an elegant and flavorful close to a night that celebrated not only the heritage but the boundless creativity of Asian Americans today.
